Husband. Dad. Age 53 runner. Marathon Maniac #3487. Qualified for 2013 Boston Marathon. The journey began in 2007 as a walk/jog for fitness. Then, it continued with my first marathon at New Orleans in 2010. After qualifying for Boston in late 2011, my hope is to make it through the registration process during September 2012 and actually run the Boston Marathon in April 2013.

A Much Better Hydration Experience

I ran 19 miles this morning and did it as planned based on lessons learned after last week's horrible dehydration experience. Most of today's run was around a 1.8 mile loop trail. I brought four 20 oz Gatorade G02 bottles and left three of them in the back of my truck. The temperature was near 70F at my 6 AM start and was forecasted to climb quickly during the day. There was also an unexpected early morning fog. Is that like 100% humidity?

Off I went on my run carrying my one bottle. I hydrated often with quick sips and planned to consume one 20 oz drink every three laps (5.6 miles) and then grab the next bottle. After I ran the 19 miles, I took the last few gulps from the fourth bottle: 80 ounces of drink had been consumed. The temperature when I finished was around 79F with 70% humidity. When I arrived home, I weighed myself again and found I had still dropped one pound. So, I think I've got the hydration figured out a lot better this time, which was much different from how I felt after the 16 miles last week. This morning, I felt great and could have run another 7 miles if it had been a marathon day. Hopefully, I will feel that way when I reach the 19 mile mark in three weeks at Rock 'n' Roll San Diego!

Lesson Learned: Hydration

While in Gulf Shores, Alabama, for my daughter's softball playoffs, I chose the state park paved trails for my long run. The trails are made up of several out and back mini-trails that join together at a restroom and water fountain. Knowing I would go by that fountain a few times, I chose not to bring any extra water. Big mistake! This morning was different from any of my previous long runs. It was warm and very humid. I began to sweat very early in my run which should have been a warning sign to me. This was supposed to be a fairly slow pace, so no big deal.

From my hotel, I ran down the highway to the trail, then along the trail, finally reaching the water fountain after 5 miles. Taking a few gulps, I continued on to the next out and back, four miles later, and gulped again. Then a third time out and back, and a few more gulps. By now, I was probably very dehydrated but did not stop to realize it. I continued on along the trail which was leading back toward my hotel. I stopped briefly to take a picture of a poisonous Copperhead snake on the path. About halfway along the last trail, I realized I was done. In the final few miles, my pace slowed a huge amount in order to hold my heart rate, until finally after 16 miles, I quit for good.
From that point, it was still more than a two mile walk to my hotel. I began the walk along the paved road, cars going by, but nothing but woods on either side. After a short distance, I realized I had not had anything to drink in 5 miles, it was sunny, getting warmer, and still very humid. My lack of hydration was making me wonder if I was going to make it back. I continued on, walking...more like dragging, along, inching closer to my destination. On several occasions, I wrestled with my thoughts...should I flag someone for help? I became a little lightheaded. Should I lie down in the grass along the shoulder? Should I continue on? My pride made me continue on. I stopped once to pick a rock off my shoe, and almost wasn't sure I could start again. Closer and closer I inched, now thinking about waking up in a hospital with an IV in my arm. Crazy! Eventually I saw my hotel and one major highway crossing to get to it. I stayed focused and told myself not to fall down in the middle of the highway!

Arriving into my room, I downed my Gatorade almost instantly, then I grabbed a wet rag and soaked my head. I felt like I might survive now. I stayed there quite a while, then showered and headed to the ballgames. At the ballpark, I consumed three more PowerAdes over about an hour and then went to pee. Very little came out (after 60 oz consumed since I got to my hotel). I still felt very...different, the sun was baking me at the ballpark, and I was wondering again if I was recovering or not? It wasn't until a couple hours later, that I felt in control again.

Lesson learned: I have only been involved in long run training since this past winter. What this means is I have never run a long distance in the warm humid weather even though I have run shorter distances many times when temps were over 90°F and the heat index over 100°F. As I approach my summer long run training, I now realize I must make an extraordinary effort to hydrate along the way. I read up on the quantity of fluids to consume per hour and now have a plan. Realizing I cannot carry the amount of liquid that I will need for the entire long run, I will now run in several loops and have ample fluids available to replenish. I will carry 20 oz. in my hydration bottles and make sure that full amount is consumed evenly each hour. After each hour, I will refill the bottles and go for another hour. I am very fortunate to have made it through this experience without a serious outcome. I have learned.

Going for the Triple Crown

Heading West. It's official! I am now entered into the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon at San Diego on June 6th. I had not planned to run another marathon until later this fall....until I got "The Email". The RnR people sent an email out to all the marathoners that were herded off the course after Mile 20 during the stormy weather in Nashville. The email included another apology and an offer for a discounted entry into another RnR event and 50 slots were opened for two closed out events. I did some quick looks at San Diego on the internet...and in no time I replied to RnR that I wanted in on that event!

Coach, Get me Ready! I asked my new training coach, Jeff Kline, http://www.prsfit.com/, if he thought it was a good idea to go after this marathon since I just got back from the Nashville race and there's only 5 weeks until San Diego....or would it be better to hold off and get started into my new training program working towards the fall marathon lineup. I asked if he could do something during the next few weeks to make me a little more prepared than I have been. He asked how I felt right now and I said I am ready to run! He spruced up my training routine and off we go. Yikes!
Mild Weather Marathon in June? I couldn't believe how mild the San Diego weather typically is even in the summer time. The last thing I wanted was to go run a warm weather marathon. Of course, there's still that possibility, but I am now fully committed. My hotel and plane ticket were reserved even before I received confirmation that I would be one of the lucky 50 people to get in. So, today RnR sent me instructions to make the entry and now I am officially registered. Woot!

Triple Crown Bling. I stated sometime ago, before ever running my first marathon, that I wanted to go for the Triple Crown bling this year. That would require completing three Rock n Roll events in a calendar year. I never expected that I would actually fulfill that, much less to do it in the first half of the year. So, all I have to do is crawl across the finish line at San Diego and a few weeks later, the Triple Crown will come my way!
